Boot Fitting Tips

EU and US Sizing

More sizes means a better fit! Most mountaineering footwear is built on European half sizes which are smaller increments than US half sizes. This gives us five extra sizes per size run, which gives you a better fit!

Our Take

Better than Ever

The evolution of leading ice and mixed climbing boot continues with the Phantom Tech. The latest version improves fit, protection and warmth while reducing it's eco-impact. Primaloft Gold and Ortholite O-Therm up the warmth factor, while a RECCO reflector increases searchability. The final product maximizes your ability to accomplish your high-end, high-output ice and mixed climbing objectives, allowing you to move quickly and efficiently over technical terrain.

    Why We Love It
    Dustin Wittmier

When freezing levels are high and the terrain gets technical, the Phantom Tech earns its place. The integrated supergaiter keeps feet dry in the wet, slushy conditions that are a fact of life guiding in the Pacific Northwest, where liquid water is just as much a threat as snow. The slim profile is a genuine performance feature, giving you a clear sightline to footholds on technical terrain and precise placements on steep ice and mixed climbing. Guides have taken these from everyday Rainier climbs to routes like Mount Fitz Roy in Patagonia and they hold up, with five-plus seasons of use reported without major failures. A couple of honest notes worth knowing: hot feet are a real issue when temperatures climb, so these are a warm weather problem rather than an all-season solution. Laces will eventually give out and replacing them is a pain because they run under the gaiter. Two maintenance tips from guides who have put serious time in these boots: reseal the gaiter to the sole with Flex Seal spray to extend the life considerably, and add boot glue to keep waterproofing intact. Most importantly, fit matters more than anything else here. Try them on before you commit, because the La Sportiva G2 offers similar performance but fits differently.

“The Scarpa Phantom Tech is the best all around boot I have ever used. They are warm for a single boot, but still light. They also have a great sole for ice climbing. However, all boot and shoe choices are foot shape dependent.”
