The Cache Story
Gear Earned on Real Mountains
The Gear Cache is our curated collection of used outdoor gear — sourced directly from the RMI guide team and our rental fleet on Mt. Rainier. This is gear that has actually been to the top.
Every piece is personally inspected and rated by our staff before it enters the Cache. We guarantee functionality on everything we sell. If it doesn't meet our standards, it doesn't make it in.
Safety gear is never resold. Harnesses, helmets, avalanche beacons, and ropes are retired — not recycled into the Cache.
Our Rating System
Mountain gear is built to last. It can take years of cosmetic wear before performance is affected. Our 4-tier system tells you exactly what to expect from every piece. Functionality is guaranteed — regardless of tier.

Why It Matters
Outdoor gear takes significant energy and resources to produce. When high-quality equipment gets retired simply because it's cosmetically worn, that's a waste — of materials, of craftsmanship, and of gear that still has years of performance left.
The Gear Cache extends the useful life of premium mountain gear. Every piece you buy from the Cache is a piece that didn't end up in a landfill — and a piece that's heading back into the mountains where it belongs.
Buy well, use it hard, pass it on.
Common Questions
Every piece is physically inspected by a member of our staff before entering the Cache. We look at overall condition, visible wear, age of the product, and test functionality. The tier reflects what you can see and feel — not just our opinion.
Yes — 100%, regardless of tier. If a piece doesn't function as originally designed, it doesn't make it into the Cache. A Tier 4 jacket will keep you warm and dry just like a Tier 1. The difference is cosmetic wear, not performance.
Most Cache gear comes from two sources: our RMI guide team cycling through their personal kits, and our rental fleet on Mt. Rainier. This is gear that has genuinely been to the top of some serious mountains.
We never resell life-safety equipment — this includes harnesses, helmets, avalanche beacons, ropes, and carabiners. Regardless of condition or tier, these items are retired from use. Your safety is not negotiable.
Yes. Cache gear is covered by the same return policy as new gear. If something doesn't meet your expectations based on how it was described and rated, we'll make it right.
New items are added regularly as RMI guides cycle through their kits at the end of a season and as we refresh the rental fleet. Check back often — popular pieces sell quickly.
