Our Take
The Patagonia R1® Pullover Hoody is a classic and integral piece in our layering system. Made from a blend of recycled polyester and spandex, and constructed in a classic grid pattern to trap heat and wick moisture, it's a versatile, technical, midlayer fleece for stop/start activities in cold conditions.
RMI Expeditions' guides wear this as their second baselayer - it's super breathable, form-fitting, and works great as a pillow when in a bind. Just be sure it doesn't fit too tight: this should go over your light baselayer and comfortably under your outer insulative layers.

I love this highly versatile layer. I use it as a baselayer on colder climbs and also as a mid layer on Rainier and other summer climbs. It's durable too, I got my first R1 for a Denali climb 5 years ago and it is still in my kit today.

I have bought four of these. They go with me on every trip. Like the guide said in his review, it’s a perfect bit of kit. I can run in it in 30* F with the wind blowing and it has never let me down. I wore one when I climbed Orizaba and some of the 14ers.
