Baker - North Ridge
Steep Ice and Serious Adventure
The North Ridge of Mount Baker is a true alpine classic — a striking line of steep ice, crevassed glacier travel, and technical climbing high above the North Cascades. This collection features the gear RMI guides use on this demanding route, built for climbers ready to push their skills on one of the most aesthetic climbs in the lower 48.

Climb Baker’s North Ridge with RMI
RMI’s Baker North Ridge climb combines steep ice climbing, glacier navigation, and expedition-style camping. Over three days, climbers ascend 50°–60° alpine ice to reach the summit, gaining experience that translates directly to bigger peaks like Rainier and Denali.

Rent for the North Ridge
Outfitting for steep ice doesn’t mean buying it all. Our Ashford rental program offers ice tools, double boots, crampons, and protective outerwear — the same equipment used by RMI guides on Baker’s technical routes.

The RMI North Ridge Gear List
This collection mirrors RMI’s official gear list for the Baker North Ridge climb. Expect colder conditions, heavier packs, and steeper terrain — so every item here is chosen for protection, efficiency, and reliability on ice.

Baker - North Ridge FAQ
The Baker North Ridge climb is a technical test piece — combining glacier travel, steep ice, and full-value alpine conditions. Proper gear makes the difference between surviving the route and enjoying it. Here are a few common questions about outfitting for the climb.
Are single boots enough for Baker’s North Ridge?
Yes. RMI’s gear list specifies insulated, full-shank, crampon-compatible single mountaineering boots as ideal for the North Cascades. Pick a warm, stiff model that pairs well with steel crampons.
Do I bring one axe or two tools?
Bring one set of technical ice climbing tools (two tools) and a tether. The route includes sustained steep ice where dual tools are the standard.
What crampons are appropriate?
Use 12-point steel crampons with anti-balling plates; rigid-frame technical crampons are also suitable for the North Ridge’s steeper ice.
