The active insulator for high-output cold.

The R1 Air Full-Zip Hoody is engineered for the moments when you are moving fast and generating heat, but the air temperature is trying to freeze you. Unlike traditional heavy fleeces that trap too much moisture, this technical midlayer uses a unique zig-zag texture with hollow-core yarns to trap body heat while aggressively venting excess sweat. It is the ultimate "stop-and-go" piece for ski touring, winter climbing, and cold-weather running, allowing you to keep your rhythm without constantly layering up and down.

Our Take

The R1 Air is the answer to the age-old problem of "sweating out" your layers. We recommend this piece specifically for high-output days, think skinning up a volcano or speed-hiking in November. While the standard R1 is a durable classic, the R1 Air is the performance engine. The open weave feels almost weightless, and you can literally feel the breeze move through it when you pick up the pace, drying you out instantly. It’s not a windbreaker; it’s a heat-management system.

Why We Love It
Nick Sinapius

The R1 Hoody has been a guide staple for years, and it keeps earning that spot. The grid fleece construction manages moisture well enough to wear hard on an approach and insulating enough to keep you comfortable when you stop moving. The hood fits cleanly under a climbing helmet without bunching, which sounds like a small thing until you are fussing with a layer mid-route. It layers naturally into an alpine system across a wide range of temperatures, and it is trim enough to wear under a shell without adding bulk. The full zip gives you quick ventilation when you need it. Durable, versatile, and comfortable enough to wear off the mountain too.

“The Patagonia r1 is a fantastic layer. It is breathable, light, durable, and is perfect to have under my other layers.”
— Nick Sinapius, RMI Guide

Our Philosophy

We Simplify Outfitting

Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. Rainier safely. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.

Who are these guys?

Patagonia

We stock Patagonia because they prove that performance and responsibility are not mutually exclusive. For decades, they have been the conscience of the outdoor industry, but more importantly for our customers, they build gear that simply works. From their legendary Regulator fleece to their bombproof shells, Patagonia equipment is a staple in our packs because it survives the abuse of the alpine environment season after season—and it’s all backed by their Ironclad Guarantee.
