Boot Fitting Tips

EU and US Sizing

More sizes means a better fit! Most mountaineering footwear is built on European half sizes which are smaller increments than US half sizes. This gives us five extra sizes per size run, which gives you a better fit!

    Our Take

We know that when the temperature plummets and the altitude climbs, single boots simply will not cut it. We outfit our winter and expedition clients with the La Sportiva G2 Evo because it offers true double-boot warmth in an astonishingly lightweight package. It is our absolute gold standard for extreme objectives like Denali or Aconcagua, providing the critical insulation needed to prevent frostbite while still climbing with the agility of a much smaller boot.

    Why We Love It
    Jack Delaney

When the temperature drops to minus 15 and your partners are cutting the day short with cold feet, what is on your feet becomes the whole conversation. The G2 has kept guides warm through multiple Denali and Aconcagua expeditions, hundreds of days of Alaskan ice climbing, and early season Rainier climbs where conditions demand a true double boot. For how warm and capable they are, the weight is surprisingly low, and the dexterity on technical terrain outperforms what the warmth rating would suggest. The BOA lacing system makes getting in and out fast, and the removable liner means you can swap to warmer aftermarket liners when factory insulation is not enough, or wear the liner inside puffy booties for walking around high camp on Denali. Keep the zipper cleaned and lubed regularly to maintain the system over time. Two honest limitations: these boots overheat quickly in warmer temperatures and become uncomfortable on snow-free trail approaches, and the upper can feel cumbersome when pulling pants over them. Fit is everything here, just like every serious mountaineering boot. If the G2 fits your foot, you have the lightest, warmest, most capable double boot available.

“These boots are surprisingly dexterous and warm for how lightweight they are.”
    — Jack Delaney, RMI Guide

    Our Philosophy

    We Simplify Outfitting

Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. Rainier safely. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.
