Our Take

Technical Mountaineering Crampons

The climber’s secret weapon for technical terrain. With vertical, toothed front points, SARKEN crampons provide superior penetration on hard ice, while also providing solid purchase in snow. The distribution of its 12 points provides stability and bite on low angles, as well as steeper terrain. The LEVERLOCK UNIVERSEL binding system is designed to fit boots with heel welts.

Why We Love It
George Hedreen

The Sarken fills a gap that most crampons miss. It handles general mountaineering comfortably and then keeps working when the terrain pushes into steeper snow, alpine ice, and routes like the Kautz or the North Ridge of Baker where a standard 10-point crampon starts to feel like the wrong tool. The vertical front points climb as well as dedicated ice tools, but without the aggressive stance and fatigue that comes with pure technical crampons on long glacier approaches. The real edge is the Petzl modular system: buy one set of Sarken front sections, add a set of Dart fronts, and you have two crampon configurations from one base. Swap what you need depending on the objective. One maintenance tip worth knowing: do not replace front points when they dull. A steel file brings them back, and with proper care these points last a long time. Honest limitations: the fit can create a gap under the ball of the foot on some boots while ice climbing, and more moving parts mean more exposure to wear and grime on volcanic terrain. Not the call for vertical water ice, but for everything up to and including serious alpine ice, they hold their own.

“The Petzl Sarkens are the ideal crampons for when the Kautz is in full ice conditions. The vertically oriented front points sink easily into hard alpine ice but provide the necessary stability in softer conditions.”
— George Hedreen, RMI Guide
