Ultra-Warm Down Parka for Bone-Chilling Temps.

The Mountain Hardwear Phantom Belay Down Parka is meticulously engineered to deliver massive, uncompromising warmth exactly when you stop moving. Rather than just stuffing a jacket full of insulation, Mountain Hardwear thoughtfully designed this parka for the realities of climbing, by adding reinforced weather resistance where you need it and ensuring the massive hood fits effortlessly over your helmet. Whether you are hunkering down on a windy, exposed ridge or waiting out a long ice climbing belay, this is the definitive cold-weather armor you need when stopping is just as punishing as climbing.

Our Take

An unreliable belay jacket can quickly turn a frigid transition into a dangerous situation. We trust the Mountain Hardwear Phantom Belay Down Parka because it delivers expedition-grade warmth while thoughtfully solving the problem of pack compression. It is an absolute workhorse of a parka that we rely on to provide immediate, impenetrable heat the second you clip into an anchor or stumble into high camp.

Why We Love It
Arianna Dreschler

A good parka is the layer you are most grateful for when things get cold and serious, and the Phantom earns its place across guiding, skiing, and backcountry objectives through three-plus seasons of hard use. It is warm enough to sleep in on the coldest nights and packable enough to bring without thinking twice, and it handles damp conditions better than most down parkas, staying drier when the weather is not fully committing to either rain or cold. The fit goes over all other layers without binding, and in a pinch it fits under a rain jacket for an extra insulation layer when conditions demand it. One field trick worth knowing: drape it over your sleeping bag while you sleep and your body heat will dry it out overnight, useful on multi-day trips when you cannot afford to pack wet insulation. The one honest wish from guides who love it: a slightly longer cut for better coverage in the back.

“My Mountain Hardware Phantom Belay Parka has never disappointed me. Warm, durable, and easy to compact- it’s provided me many shiver-free breaks in the mountains.”
— Arianna Dreschler, RMI Guide

Our Philosophy

We Simplify Outfitting

Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. Rainier safely. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.

Who are these guys?

Mountain Hardwear

Mountain Hardwear was founded by industry rebels who wanted to make equipment that didn't compromise. We carry them at Whittaker Mountaineering because they consistently produce the "hardware" of the climbing world that are engineered to survive the most abrasive, intense conditions on the planet.
