Boot Fitting Tips

EU and US Sizing

More sizes means a better fit! Most mountaineering footwear is built on European half sizes which are smaller increments than US half sizes. This gives us five extra sizes per size run, which gives you a better fit!

The undisputed queen of lightweight leather mountaineering.

The La Sportiva Nepal Cube GTX represents the pinnacle of single leather mountaineering boots. It takes the legendary durability and performance of the classic Nepal series and strips away the bulk, utilizing advanced materials to create a significantly lighter, warmer boot. Designed for technical alpine climbing, mixed terrain, and vertical ice, this boot delivers uncompromising stiffness for front-pointing without feeling like a cinder block on your foot. Whether you are kicking steps up the Disappointment Cleaver or swinging tools in Ouray, the Nepal Cube provides the precise, confident interface you need to tackle serious vertical objectives.

Our Take

We consistently see the Nepal Cube GTX dominate the mountain for a reason. It offers the classic durability of a full-leather boot but drastically cuts the weight, keeping your legs fresh during a demanding 14-hour summit push. It is our definitive choice for climbers who demand uncompromising warmth and stiffness but want to move fast and efficiently above the clouds.

Straight From The Source

Why We Love It
Roland Scott

The Nepal Cube is the boot guides reach for day after day on Rainier because it simply holds up. One guide ran the same pair for six full guiding seasons before replacing them, another has put two hard seasons on hers and says they still look brand new. The warmth is serious enough that guides have been caught in colder-than-expected conditions and come through without cold feet, and the dexterity holds up on technical terrain well beyond standard glacier routes, including 5.6 rock and technical ice. The GTX construction keeps feet dry in most conditions, though on heavy rain days on the snowfield they will eventually get wet. Two maintenance habits worth building: treat the leather every spring to maintain water resistance and extend the life of the upper, and put boots on a dryer immediately after every climb to prevent moisture from degrading the materials. Laces will eventually fray after heavy use, but that is the only recurring complaint across multiple seasons of hard guide use. One important caveat guides are consistent about: fit matters enormously with this boot. If they do not fit your foot well they will cause real problems, so try before you buy and consider adding custom insoles.

“I’ve been on countless climbs that have been colder than expected, but these boots have never failed to keep my feet warm even in colder than expected temps. I’ve also used them on more technical 5.6+ terrain and been able to climb with precision and speed.”
— Roland Scott, RMI Guide

Our Philosophy

We Simplify Outfitting

Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. Rainier safely. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.
