Our Take

The Expedition 3 is the definition of a workhorse ski pole: simple, durable, and effective in every condition we’ve thrown at it . We appreciate the aluminum construction which resists snapping better than carbon when banged against rocks or ski edges, and the updated grip features make transitions noticeably smoother .

Why We Love It
Thomas Skoog

In the mountains, a broken pole is not an inconvenience, it is dead weight. The Expedition 3 has earned its reputation the hard way, with guides putting the same pairs through three or more seasons of alpine climbing, ski touring, and hiking without seeing them blow out. The aluminum construction hits a sweet spot that carbon misses: light enough to carry all day, tough enough to survive a heavy pack and hard terrain without snapping. The three-section collapse packs it down small enough to stow mid-route or lash to a pack without it becoming a bumping hazard on technical terrain. The grips are a standout too, comfortable on long approaches and confidence-inspiring with gloves on. Field repair is straightforward when something does go wrong. One guide tip worth stealing: hollow out the top of the pole cap and embed a small compass, a genuinely useful trick on ski tours when you need a quick bearing. Cold weather can make the clamp mechanism stiff if moisture gets in, so keep that in mind in winter conditions. Wrap some duct tape around the shaft before you head out and you will always have it when you need it.

“I’ve snapped my fair share of carbon trekking poles through a combination of a heavy pack and lots of days in the mountains. Although I appreciate shaving grams, if your gear isn’t durable you’re going to end up carrying it as dead weight sooner or later. The expedition 3 poles strike a nice balance between weight and durability due to their aluminum construction. They are also very adjustable across many kinds of terrain.”

Our Philosophy

We Simplify Outfitting

Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. Rainier safely. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.

Who are these guys?

Black Diamond

Black Diamond has been outfitting mountain professionals for decades, building gear that’s tested on real climbs, not just in labs. We carry Black Diamond because their designs consistently deliver dependable performance where it matters most.
