Mountaineering Day School
Start Your Mountaineering Journey
The Mountaineering Day School is RMI’s hands-on introduction to climbing. In a single day, participants learn the fundamentals of ice axe use, self-arrest, crampon technique, and rope travel — all on the lower slopes of Mount Rainier. This collection features the personal gear you’ll need to train, learn, and move confidently in snow-covered terrain.

Learn the Basics with RMI
RMI’s Mountaineering Day School is the perfect first step for aspiring climbers. Led by professional guides on Mount Rainier’s lower glaciers, this one-day course teaches essential movement and safety skills — the same techniques used on Rainier, Denali, and beyond.

Rent What You Need for the Course
Don’t have all your gear yet? No problem. Our rental shop in Ashford provides boots, crampons, ice axes, and more — the same gear RMI guides use during training. Pick up everything you need before your course and return it when the day’s done.

The RMI Day School Gear List
This collection matches RMI’s official gear list for the Mountaineering Day School. It’s all about layering for variable weather, learning to move efficiently in snow, and carrying just what you need for a day on the mountain.

Mountaineering Day School FAQ
The Mountaineering Day School is all about fundamentals — mastering the techniques that build confidence and safety for future climbs. Here are a few common gear questions from first-time participants.
What kind of boots do I need?
A sturdy, waterproof mountaineering or heavy-duty hiking boot works best. It should be crampon-compatible and supportive enough for snow travel. Insulated single boots are ideal for cold or early-season conditions.
What clothing should I wear for the day?
Dress in layers you can easily add or remove. You’ll need a moisture-wicking baselayer, a warm midlayer, and a waterproof shell. See our Guide to Mountain Layering for examples of how to stay comfortable in variable weather.
Do I need technical climbing gear?
RMI provides ropes and group equipment, but you’ll need your own harness, helmet, ice axe, and crampons. These are the same personal items used on Rainier’s summit climbs, so it’s great practice with real gear.
