Our Take

At Whittaker Mountaineering, we value the Couloir because it solves real challenges for alpine travelers: it’s compact enough to disappear into your pack, strong enough for technical movement, and intuitive to put on with gloves or skis on. The streamlined webbing construction keeps weight down without feeling flimsy, making it a dependable option when you need performance without bulk.

Why We Love It
Sam Hoffman

On steep, cold, or exposed terrain, the last thing you want is to sit down and wrestle with your harness. The Couloir goes on without removing skis or crampons, which sounds like a convenience until you are standing on a 40-degree slope at 3am and suddenly it is everything. The ultralight, packable build means it disappears in your pack on the approach without taking up meaningful space or weight, and guides have run multiple seasons on a single harness before needing a replacement. One honest limitation that guides are upfront about: this is not a harness you want to hang in for extended periods. For glacier travel, alpine routes, and objectives where you are moving rather than belaying pitches from a hanging stance, it covers everything you need without compromise.

“The Black Diamond Couloir harness is a simple design that has just what you need. It has a low-profile waist that is comfortable while wearing a backpack.”
— Sam Hoffman, RMI Guide

Our Philosophy

We Simplify Outfitting

Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. Rainier safely. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.

Who are these guys?

Black Diamond

Black Diamond has been outfitting mountain professionals for decades, building gear that’s tested on real climbs, not just in labs. We carry Black Diamond because their designs consistently deliver dependable performance where it matters most.
