A Fresh Take on Old Gear
Picture this: you’re prepping for your big climb up Mount Rainier—comparing ice axes and reading trip reports—only to realize your battered boots are one step away from splitting at the seams (and from sending you on a one-way trip to Blister Town). You know you need an upgrade, but you also cringe at the environmental toll and sticker shock of brand-new gear. Enter Whittaker Mountaineering’s Gear Cache and Rental Programs, your sustainable one-two punch for getting the equipment you need without torching your wallet—or the planet.
Renting and reusing gear isn’t just about saving money (though who doesn’t love that?). It’s part of a larger move toward circular economies in the outdoor industry, where well-made products stay in play as long as possible before heading to the landfill. If you’ve ever scored a pair of “experienced” boots that have summited Rainier more times than you have, you’re already on board with the idea. Below, we’ll explore why these programs matter, how they work at Whittaker Mountaineering, and where we’re headed next.
Why Renting and Resale Are on the Rise
In the not-too-distant past, renting gear often meant rummaging through musty shelves for a pair of questionable crampons. Thanks to the popularity of secondhand marketplaces and growing environmental concerns, rental and resale programs across the outdoor industry have come a long way.
-
Cutting Costs & Lowering Barriers
Let’s be real: cost is a huge barrier to adventure. A full mountaineering kit can easily soar into five-figure territory. Renting or buying gently used items gives newcomers a budget-friendly entry point and seasoned climbers a chance to try new gear without committing to a major purchase [Outdoor Industry Association, 2022]. -
Reducing Environmental Impact
Manufacturing new gear consumes raw materials, water, and energy. By circulating used items longer—through rentals or resale—you shrink the demand for fresh production and lighten the industry’s overall resource footprint [Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2020]. -
Tapping Into the Circular Economy
A “circular economy” emphasizes keeping products in use for as long as possible. Think of it like passing a well-loved backpack between friends or families, rather than tossing it after one worn-out zipper. In the outdoor world, brands like Patagonia (via Worn Wear) have championed these efforts, showing that secondhand is both profitable and eco-friendly [Patagonia, 2022].
Whittaker Mountaineering’s programs may be local to the Ashford and Rainier region, but they sit at the cutting edge of a broader trend: giving gear a second, third, or even tenth life.
The Concept of a Circular Economy (and Why Gear Fits Right In)
A circular economy stands in stark contrast to the traditional “take-make-dispose” model. Rather than extracting resources to create a product that eventually ends up as waste, circularity involves:
-
Designing for Durability: Gear that can handle more than just a few climbs, featuring replaceable parts and robust fabrics.
-
Prolonging Product Life: Regular maintenance, repairs, rentals, and resales, so items serve multiple owners over time.
-
Recycling & Reintegrating: Ultimately, gear that reaches the end of its functional life can be responsibly recycled or repurposed—think shredded climbing ropes turned into rugs, or aluminum tent poles re-smelted for new uses.
Why gear? Because high-quality mountaineering equipment is practically built to last—if you treat it right. A sturdy shell jacket or pair of double boots can tackle season after season (and summit after summit) with proper care. By renting and reselling, Whittaker Mountaineering helps keep that “circular” momentum going strong.
Whittaker Mountaineering’s Rental Program: Because Buying Isn’t Always Better
“Why Not Rent?” That’s a fair question, especially when a single down jacket can cost the same as a weekend getaway. For many, rental gear is the perfect solution. Here’s how Whittaker Mountaineering makes it easy:
-
Reserve Online
You can book your gear right on our website. Need technical boots for Rainier, or just a rain shell for a weekend hike? Click, pay, and done.
-
Pick Up or Ship
If you’re swinging by Ashford, your reserved items will be waiting—no rummaging through a gear closet the size of a broom cupboard. For those living farther away, we can ship to your door, arriving at least 10 days before your climb (so you can test fit and break in that shiny “rental new” gear).
-
Drop Off Dirty
After your trip, return it as-is—no laundry or scrubbing required. If we’re closed, just drop your gear or apparel in our gear slot and drive away. It's drop and go!
Not only do you skip the cost of buying gear you might only need once, but you also reduce waste by keeping a smaller personal inventory. Plus, renting ensures the equipment you use is well-maintained and up-to-date—our staff inspects everything meticulously before it goes back out.
Sustainable Benefits of Renting
-
You save precious materials by not purchasing items you’ll barely use.
-
The gear rotation ensures responsible maintenance (regular cleanings, checkups, and repairs), so each piece remains in solid shape.
-
You slash the packaging waste associated with shipping new products, not to mention the carbon footprint of manufacturing them in the first place [Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2020].
The Gear Cache: Our “Experienced” Gear, Ready for Round Two (or Three)
We’ve All Been There: You’re having a post-hike beer with friends, only to realize your boots have done more miles than your odometer can count. Enter our Gear Cache, the place where “experienced” mountaineering equipment finds a second home (or a third or fourth… we don’t judge). Why buy new when you can snag gear that’s:
-
Proven Gear: Some boots in our Gear Cache have literally summited Rainier—meaning you’re buying a piece of tried and tested equipment.
-
Deeply Discounted: We’re talking 30-90% off, depending on condition tier. Your wallet will thank you, and so will the planet.
-
Extensively Vetted: Items go through our staff’s thorough inspection process. If something doesn’t meet performance standards, it doesn’t make the cut. We never resell critical safety gear like ropes, harnesses, carabiners, or helmets.
We break down condition into four tiers—Admired, Liked, Loved, and Adored—so you know exactly what you’re getting. An “Admired” piece is basically brand-new, while “Adored” means the item has more scuffs and stories under its belt (but is still completely functional).
Sustainable Benefits of Resale
-
Each purchase diverts gear from potential landfill purgatory.
-
Lower price points mean more people can afford quality gear, encouraging them to invest in durable products they’ll keep using.
-
Reuse extends the product lifecycle, further reducing the need for fresh manufacturing and resource extraction [Outdoor Industry Association, 2022].
Every year in September, we have a massive Post Monsoon where we move a large portion of our rental goods into our Gear Cache - meaning you can snag a great deal on used mountaineering gear and apparel, extending the lifecycle of these products even more.
The Future of Sustainability at Whittaker Mountaineering
We’re not resting on our laurels. As the outdoor industry shifts toward more sustainable models, Whittaker Mountaineering is continually refining our programs:
Increasing our Sustainable Offerings: We're constantly on the look out for gear and apparel that not only works well in the mountains, but is sustainably manufactured, packaged, and sold. Certifications like Bluesign™ and Cradle-to-Cradle™ are increasingly common in the outdoor industry, and we do our best to carry these products when they meet our consumers needs.
Carbon Neutral Shipping: We currently partner with Shopify Planet to offer carbon neutral shipping on our online retail orders. When customers opt in to our Planet option at checkout, a small fee (paid by us, not the customer) goes directly to a myriad of organizations working to remove carbon from the atmosphere, like GrassRoots Carbon, Mast Reforestation, and others. Since we implemented this program in April of 2024, over 2,500 orders have been shipped carbon neutral; removing 1,610 kg of carbon from the atmosphere!
E-Bikes in Mount Rainier National Park: Starting this spring, we are introducing an E-Bike rental program here in Ashford. That means you'll be able to rent an E-Bike, zip to the entrance of Mount Rainier National Park, and explore without idling your car in an entrance line for hours. We're stoked about this new offering, and about the opportunity to provide a more eco-conscious way to explore our backyard.
These expansions aren’t just good for the environment; they’re great for building community. By making sustainable choices the default, we help everyone—newcomers and veteran climbers alike—feel like part of a bigger, greener mission.
Practical Tips to Get the Most out of Rentals & Used Gear
Before you dive headfirst into the Gear Cache or sign up for your first rental, here are a few pro tips:
-
Plan Your Dates Wisely
-
Reserve early, especially during busy climbing seasons, to guarantee availability and the best gear fit.
-
If shipping, give yourself enough lead time to break in new (to you) boots so you’re not hobbling by day two on the mountain.

-
Ask Questions
-
Unsure what tier of condition you need? Chat with our staff or read through the product descriptions. They’ll tell you if an item has a small stain, a missing buckle, or if it’s basically mint.

Respect the Gear
-
When renting, treat it as if it’s your own. A little care goes a long way in preserving equipment for future adventurers (and gets you your deposit back!).

Proper Storage
-
If you purchase used gear, learn how to store it. Most items last longer when kept clean, dry, and out of direct sunlight [Patagonia, 2022].

By taking these steps, you’ll maximize your gear’s life span and help maintain that virtuous cycle of reuse.
Gear for the Next Generation of Climbers
From well-priced rentals to your dream jacket with a bit of “character,” Whittaker Mountaineering’s Gear Cache and Rental Programs represent more than just a business model—they’re part of a broader cultural shift toward sustainability in outdoor recreation. We believe that top-notch gear shouldn’t be reserved for those with the deepest pockets, and that the best equipment often comes with a backstory, not just a shiny tag.
So, the next time you’re craving high-alpine adventure but balking at the price (and environmental cost) of brand-new kit, remember there’s another way. Check out our rentals, peruse our “experienced” gear, and help us keep the cycle of reusing, repairing, and reloving gear alive. Mount Rainier’s storms may be legendary, but with the right gear—and the right mindset—we can weather them sustainably, ensuring these mountains stay wild and wonderful for generations of climbers to come.
